Eight hectares of land in
the Tuscan Maremma, along the plain that from Marsiliana slopes
down to the sea. Palmo di Terra, our family-run farm business,
is located here, where we chose to live and work in a job that
we like, growing high-quality organic products (wine, oil, and
saffron) thanks to the expertise and passion of our farm manager
Ermanno.
We redesigned our company’s map according to
nature’s time. We planted Mediterranean Scrub woods with 1,400
trees. We handled the new grafts in the vineyard and extended olive
cultivation to almost 500 trees, mostly of the Frantoiano and Leccino
varieties. We rediscovered the saffron cultivation, which had gone
lost in the Maremma area. We also cultivate a vegetable garden and
a fruit garden with approximately 50 plants mainly for on-farm consumption.
The vineyard is 90 meters above sea level on hills
looking south-west with clayey-chalky land. Sangiovese and Montepulciano
grapes are cultivated according to organic farming standards on 1.5
hectares of land. Winemaking is done according to the traditional “red
method”, with grape maceration at controlled temperature for
15-20 days. Montepulciano wine is aged is small barrels, while Sangiovese
wine is aged in steel tanks, then refined in bottles. The product
is a clear, deep ruby-red wine with delicate blackberry flavor and
a long, pleasant aftertaste.
Our
farmhouse was remodeled according to bio-architecture standards,
including hot water and electricity produced using the sun’s
energy. We set up two apartments with kitchen, a little house with
restroom, roof terraces and arbors overlooking the sunset, and
a swimming pool among flowers, surrounded by greenery. Everyone
can go jogging, walking, or biking on the paths and in the countryside
around our farmhouse. This is also a good place to cultivate idleness – reading,
talking, cooking, listening to music – or to get in touch
with the mysteries of the Etruscan civilization, with evocative
architecture of towns on rocks and with the Argentario sea.
Palmo
di Terra is located 6 km from the
Albegna River and 7 km from the Castle of Marsiliana. It is 20
minutes from the sea, with the pine groves and beaches of Feniglia
and Giannella, while the Thermal Baths of Saturnia in the surrounding
hills beyond our farm can be reached by car in 15 minutes.
